Learners gathered for a number of skill shares on soil, seeding, and much more!
As part of our garden program, youth visited the community garden to learn the different roles in the decomposing process. Youth learned to distinguish carbon and nitrogen as brown and green organic matter, and learned how they break down and transform into soil with the help of microorganisms, water, and oxygen. They were encouraged to bring materials they may already have at home like vegetable and fruit peels, eggs shells, used coffee grounds, dry leaves, and cardboard to add to the compost bins and help reduce food waste and greenhouse gas emissions. They engaged in turning the piles and adding mushrooms as carbon, to understand how mycelium can support the decomposition process, taking part in reducing food waste and carbon emissions.
